Coastal Armoring Project Verification
In an effort to validate current coastal armoring permits and project statuses in Palm Beach County, Florida a field visit was necessary to collect pertinent data. First, by creating a file geodatabase with custom domains, enabling attachments (photos) and capturing editing history, a coastal armoring feature service was published using ArcMap and ArcGIS Online. Adding pertinent coastal construction spatial data such as coastal monuments, public beach access locations, and a filtered layer showing armoring permits, a basic map service was defined. Using ESRI’s Collector for ArcGIS (running on a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and iPhone 5) allowed users to quickly capture armoring status, armoring details and upload photos of each project.

Field data collection using Collector for ArcGIS
The map (Web AppBuilder for ArcGIS) below displays current coastal armoring permits (source: Florida Department of Environmental Protection, refreshed nightly) and synchronized data collected from the field (the beach). Mobile data plans allowed for a constant syncing of data which allowed remote staff to monitor the success of the data collection process.
